Established in 1988, twenty-five miles of the Gauley River (and six miles of the Meadow River) in West Virginia are preserved as they pass through scenic gorges and valleys. The Gauley River is a legend, attracting whitewater enthusiasts from around the globe for the prime, world class white water rafting created by the releases from Summersville Dam. The Gauley River is considered by many to be one of, if not THE best, white water rafting runs in the country.
Dropping more than 668 feet through steep, rugged terrain, the Gauley River offers a complex stretch of white water featuring more than 100 rapids, an incredible volume of water and huge waves. No other river in America can match its combination of vigorous rapids, scenic quality and technical complexity!
In Spring and Summer, the class III-V rapids are even steeper and rockier at these lower summertime flows. Water flows determine what boats we use...60% of the time, we're in high-performance rafts; 40% of the time we're in our quick, inflatable kayaks called ‘duckies’ This trip is incredible!
The Fall Gauley season dates begin the first weekend after Labor Day, and continue for six weekends. This is when water levels are PRIME - blasting out of the dam! - creating major white water rapids that are complex and challenging, ranging from Class 4 - 5+.
